Tech Article 10-20-11 (Robotic Sailboats clean oil spills)

Last year 11 people died, and 17 were injured because of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil spill was known as the worst human error ever made, and worst oil spill accident. By the time the oil spill was over 4.9 million barrels of oil was left in the Gulf of Mexico. Cesar Harada wants a similar event to occur like this ever again. He wants to build an open source oil cleaning robot, Protei. The equipment the US Coast Guard used was only able to clean 3% of the oil spill. Cesar is hoping to use Protei to clean up the Gulf of Mexico, and keep the workers safe from the toxic mess. Video

Tech Article 10-14-11 Sidewalk that creates electricity.

In London, England's largest urban mall they're using paving slabs that transform the energy from peoples footsteps into electricity. This is how the mall will be powered. The paving slabs are made up of recycled rubber, "PaveGen." When stepping on the "PaveGen" it creates bursts of electricity to nearby appliances. The slabs can also create three days worth of energy in an on-board battery. So far there are rumors saying that there will be 20 tiles scattered along the central crossing between London's olympic stadium and mall. PaveGen is not sharing the mechanics they use for converting absorbed kinetic energy

Tech Article

An entrepreneur, Roger Davey is making an invention that takes advantage of the fact that heat rises. He wants to capture and control hot air to power cities. Davey wants to build a solar updraft tower. The tower would be 2,600 feet tall, in the Arizona desert. The tower would spin 32 turbines creating mechanical energy, which generates and converts to electricity.  The company he works for says he can create 200 megawatts of power. This would be enough to power 100,000 homes. This is different then solar power because it also works at night.
